Worldizing Audio

Worldizing is a technique within sound design pioneered by Walter Murch. Worldizing is the process of re-recording audio within a different environment. For example, the soundtrack to the film American Graffiti is based on a radio show that the characters listen to within the film. When working on the sound for American Graffiti, Murch recorded the soundtrack being played out of car stereos to make the soundtrack blend into the film better.

I was tasked with recording and then worldizing my own audio, I decided to record some short snippets of me playing guitar and to re record them in a underpass near my house. I chose to do this as I noticed the similarities between Worldizing using an echo chamber, so I aimed to add reverb to the guitars.

Unfortunately due to a recently installed sound barrier on the dual carriageway the sounds of the cars were much louder than I had expected. This combined with the lack of volume on the bluetooth speaker I used resulted in much less reverb but a lot more noise from the environment on the re-recordings.
