After having so much sucess in the student bar we were certain we wanted to make the most of university spaces, and the people, in our project. There is also a second UAL bar at the Central Saint Martins building that we could also use for our project. This did mean we still had to find two other pubs for our original concept, and technically the CSM building is in central London, which doesn’t align with the original North, South, East, West London idea.
We were now at a crossroads with our project. It seemed a massive shame to not make the most of these spaces, but it didn’t sit right with the concept we were working on, so we decided to try and work on the concept so we could include the UAL bars. A common theme when interviewing LCC students was a sense of frustration that the new building would not include a student ran bar, to the point it was mentioned in around half the recordings we gathered. As it so happens one member of our group is a student rep and an active member in the student campaign to save the LCC Darkroom bar. We thought we could potentially use this project as a way to highlight how important the space is to the students at LCC, especially given how we had experienced how useful the space is while working on this very project.
This is all well and good, but our concept is about comparing pubs using sound. So how could we showcase the much valued and endangered LCC bar, but also still compare pubs using sound? Upon some research we found a key difference between the bars at CSM and LCC, the LCC bar is ran by the student union whereas the CSM bar is ran by the university themselves.
After this revelation we had our new refined concept. We are now aiming to prove how vital the student union ran bar at LCC is by comparing it to the university ran bar at CSM, using a combination of field recordings and spoken interviews.
