Initial Interest in Sound Arts

My initial interest in sound arts developed from my interest in ambient music. The more I made and listened to ambient music, the more I began to appreciate the texture of the sounds and more atonal music. This then led me to discover ‘noise’ music. The more I researched this kind of music, I realised that it overlapped in places with sound art as a lot of it is rather avant-garde. I am very interested in the ways that sound can be recorded/created to be enjoyed outside of a conventional setting such as music or film. Another area of sound arts I am interested in is sound installation work. I find sound that has been curated for a specific space tends to be a very unique style of work, especially when it is being paired with some visual elements.

To me sound art seems to be quite a broad term, similar to terms like abstract art or experimental music. I think that some people use it as an umbrella term for any art that is audio focused, and to some extent I agree with this. From what I have read and seen for myself so far, I think that sound art is when an artist creates a work of art where the sound or acoustics are the main focal point. For example, the work of Bill Fontana’s Distant Trains. Although I also think that sound art also contains any sound/audio work that doesn’t meet the criteria for what we may consider music. (Like ‘noise music’) However these criteria are very subjective and is influenced by cultural differences and attitudes for examples differences in music theory and scales.
