As a response to a discussion in class, I was asked to choose 3 key words that relate to my ambitions and current practice within sound arts. These are the words that I feel resonate the best.
Experimentation:
As someone who comes from a more musical background, I feel it is important for me to make a conscious effort to experiment with my work. I find that there appears to be a trend within musicians whose music is more on the avant-garde side to attach the label of sound art to their work after it has been made. I want to widen my practice to include sound art in addition to music. This will undoubtably involve trying new creative practices and methods which will require me to be constantly experimenting.
Research:
I believe that if you have a good understanding of the theory of something the better your practical work will be. As I am still quite new to sound arts, I will need to research lots of areas that I am unfamiliar with. In all honesty, I tend to be somewhat dismissive a lot of art that doesn’t resonate with me straight away. Studying sound arts is an opportunity for me to educate myself on new practices and ideas that should hopefully allow me to apricate art not just on a surface level.
Design:
This word relates mostly to my practice. The entire reason I am on the Design pathway for this degree is to develop my technical skillset within sound design and sound as a whole. I am already well versed in synthesis, sampling, sound manipulation and audio editing. I am keen to develop my skills further and learn new ones. For example, as I come from a musical background, I am keen to get to know digital post-production outside of a musical context and work on sound for film and the moving image. Another skill I am looking forward to developing is working within installation work, as it is one of the main reasons I gained an interest in sound arts.
